Located east of the Kaimai-Mamaku Ranges and south of the peninsula of Coromandel, this nature paradise was named by Captain James Cook when he sailed into the bay aboard the HM Endeavour in the 18th century. Tauranga City located on the shores of a natural harbour, is a city dominated by the sea. Its marinas hold thousands of yachts and launches, while fishing charter boat operators are always ready to take you to the off shore waters in search of Marlin or other sport fish. At nearby Mount Maunganui, you can catch a wave or two, explore the town's designer craft shops, and then later settle in for a long lunch at a beach side cafe or brasserie. Round it off with a soak at the healthy saltwater hot pools or, if you're felling a little more active, climb up 'The Mount" to enjoy those glorious views from the summit. Out on the coast, tiny Maketu is known for its tasty meat pies, made to an old-fashioned family recipe. The town hosts the Maketu Kaimoana (seafood) Festival in March. Held on picturesque Okurei Point, this celebration of the region's delectable seafood includes cooking demonstrations, kapa haka performances and live entertainments. Some of the temping treats on offer include oyster bloody marys, king prawn kebabs, paua fritters, scallop and prawn wontons, seafood pies and fine New Zealand wines.
