Referring to the Lyttleton - Wellington ferries, during the years of the 2nd world war my parents and I lived in ChCh. We often spent our holidays over Christmas in a batch at Diamond Harbour. We overlooked Lyttleton and frequently saw the ferries arrive and depart. The Maori, Wahine and the Rangatira. It was very impressive.
We'd sailed from Liverpool to Auckland via. Panama in the 'Port Huon' September 1939 - then train to Wellington and ferry to Lyttleton and rail to ChCh. In 1945 we had to return to the UK on the NZ Shipping Co. 'Rimutaka' and virtually repeated the journey, except that we left NZ from Wellington. All very exciting!
