5-Day New Zealand North and South Island Highlights Trip
Journey through the North Island of New Zealand and explore Waitomo, Rotorua and Lake Taupo, and discover the natural beauty of Kaikoura and Christchurch on this 5-day trip from Auckland to Christchurch or vice versa. See the glow worms at Waitomo Caves, relax at Rotorua's geothermal wonderland, see giant sperm whales at play and be mesmerized by the natural beauty of New Zealand. This 5-day tour will have you travelling by coach, train and ferry with plenty of time at leisure to make this holiday truly magical. Day 1 - Auckland to Waitomo, Rotorua You'll be picked up at your centrally located Auckland hotel. Travel by air-conditioned coach to Rotorua via Waitomo where you will stop for a guided tour of Waitomo Caves. Your Waitomo Caves tour will end with a boat ride through the glowworm grotto that is illuminated by thousands of tiny lights emitted by the glow worms. Travel on to Rotorua by road via the Fitzgerald Glade, a section of highway where native bush forms a canopy overhead. Overnight in Rotorua. Day 2 - Rotorua Morning at leisure. In the afternoon you will join a half day tour to experience the scenic beauty of Rotorua including admission to some of Rotorua's leadingattractions. In the evening you could experience a Maori Hangi (feast) and concert (at own expense). Overnight in Rotorua. Day 3 - Rotorua to Wellington Depart Rotorua this morning by coach for Wellington traveling via Lake Taupo, Palmerston North and the Kapiti Coast. Overnight in Wellington. Day 4 - Wellington via Picton to Kaikoura This morning you will board the Inter Islander Ferry and travel via Cook Strait to Picton. On arrival you will board the TranzCoastal train and travel to Kaikoura via some spectacular scenic coast line. See some of the most impressive mountain ranges and rugged ocean coastline in New Zealand. TranzCoastal train has air-conditioned carriages, reclining seats, panoramic windows and an open-air carriage. Overnight in Kaikoura. Day 5 - Kaikoura to Christchurch Today you will go whale watching where you will see giant sperm whales, dolphins, seals and other marine life. Whale Watching is by boat or light aircraft. In the afternoon you will travel on to Christchurch by road where your tour concludes. Arthur's Pass National Park with TranzAlpine Train Small Group Tour from Christchurch
In the heart of the Southern Alps, Arthur's Pass National Park has an incredible diversity of flora and landscape. Experience a breathtaking journey aboard the TranzAlpine Train winding it's way through the magnificent Waimakariri Gorge. Join short guided walks to rainforests, rivers and mountain vistas and visit the incredible Castle Hill rocks. Traveling in a small group, maximum nine participants, allows for an intimate and informative experience. At Christchurch, board the world famous TranzAlpine Train, sit back and relax on the train journey that will take you across the Canterbury Plains, wind its way through the stunning Waimakariri Gorge and through tussock covered high country before heading into the Southern Alps. The TranzAlpine is rated one of the world's greatest train journeys and is 223 kilometers long and takes just four and a half hours. There are 16 tunnels, and 5 viaducts, the highest being the Staircase standing at 73 meters. You will be met at Arthur's Pass by your guide who will take you through the National Park where short walks can be made to experience forests, rivers and mountains vistas. You will follow the old stage coach route and travel down the spectacular Otira Gorge, testament to the road builders of the 1860's and the route taken by Maori in their quest for greenstone. Departing Arthur's pass, you will travel through the high country and a stop can be made to view Cave Stream where it burrows underground in an area of limestone cliffs and gorges, craggy outcrops and a setting of surrounding mountains. The incredible Castle Hill rocks, unique weatherworn and rain smoothed outcrops of limestone are seen from the highway and the more adventurous may wish to walk to the top of the rocks for magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. The return journey to Christchurch will include a visit to the Waimak Gorge where the Waimakariri River enters the vast Canterbury Plains.
